IPTV on Android TV and Google TV — best apps and setup

Android TV and Google TV are the most flexible platforms for IPTV — they have the full Google Play Store, so the best apps install directly with no sideloading. This guide covers the difference between Android TV and Google TV, the best apps (TiviMate, IPTV Smarters Pro, OTT Navigator), which device to buy, troubleshooting, and how to get StreamLux running in about 6 minutes.

Why Android TV is the most flexible IPTV platform

Android TV (and its newer interface, Google TV) is the platform of choice for serious IPTV users — and the reason is simple: it has the full Google Play Store. Where the Amazon Fire Stick makes you sideload apps like TiviMate, on Android TV you just install them directly, like any other app. There's no Downloader app, no developer-options toggle, no APK files.

It's also the platform the best IPTV apps are built for first. TiviMate, widely regarded as the finest IPTV player available, is designed around the Android TV remote and interface. The same goes for IPTV Smarters Pro and OTT Navigator. You get the widest app selection and the smoothest experience of any Smart TV platform.

StreamLux works on every Android TV and Google TV device, using the standard Xtream Codes login — no MAC-address registration like Samsung or LG require. Once set up you get 10,000+ live channels, the full movies and series library, and a 7-day EPG. See the full channel list and all supported devices.

Android TV vs Google TV — what's the difference for IPTV?

This confuses a lot of people, so here's the short version: Google TV is just a newer interface running on top of Android TV. The underlying operating system is the same, the Google Play Store is the same, and every IPTV app works identically on both. If a guide says "Android TV," it applies to Google TV too.

Bottom line: whichever interface your device uses, the setup process and apps below are exactly the same.

Best IPTV apps for Android TV and Google TV

All three of these install directly from the Google Play Store. Here's how to choose.

TiviMate — the best overall

TiviMate is the gold standard for IPTV on Android TV. It has the best electronic programme guide, a polished TV-like interface, favourites, multiple playlists and (in Premium) recording and multi-view. The free version is enough for a single StreamLux subscription; TiviMate Premium is an optional separate upgrade from the TiviMate developer for power-user features.

IPTV Smarters Pro — the best free option

IPTV Smarters Pro is completely free and feature-complete: live TV, movies and series in clear sections, EPG and the standard Xtream Codes login. For a no-cost setup that just works, it's the easiest starting point.

OTT Navigator — for customisation

OTT Navigator is the choice for users who want deep control — flexible layouts, advanced EPG options, multiple playlist handling and extensive playback settings. It uses the same StreamLux credentials and is available on the Play Store.

How to install IPTV on Android TV — step by step

Because Android TV has the Play Store, setup is faster than on Fire Stick, Samsung or LG — no sideloading, no MAC registration. This walkthrough uses TiviMate; IPTV Smarters Pro and OTT Navigator follow the same Xtream Codes login. Our general setup guide has screenshots.

Step 1 — Open the Google Play Store

From your Android TV or Google TV home screen, open the Google Play Store (the apps section).

Step 2 — Install your IPTV app

Search for TiviMate (or IPTV Smarters Pro) and install it directly. No Downloader app or developer settings are needed — it installs like any normal app.

Step 3 — Add a playlist with Xtream Codes

Open the app and choose to add a new playlist. Select Xtream Codes (sometimes labelled "Login with Xtream Codes API") rather than the M3U option — it's more reliable and loads EPG automatically.

Step 4 — Enter your StreamLux credentials

Enter the three details from your StreamLux activation email:

  • Server URL (sometimes called "host" or "portal")
  • Username
  • Password

These are case-sensitive. Tip: pair a Bluetooth keyboard or use the Google TV phone app to type faster than with the remote. If you don't have your email, contact support@streamlux.online.

Step 5 — Load channels and EPG

The app downloads your channel list and EPG — 1–2 minutes the first time. TiviMate then lets you arrange favourites and channel groups exactly how you like.

Step 6 — Start watching

Browse to any channel and press play. Your first channel loads within a few seconds, with the full EPG showing what's on now and next.

Don't have a subscription yet?

You need active StreamLux credentials before the steps above will work. Plans start at €12.99/month, or €5.00/month on the annual plan.

Which Android TV device is best for IPTV?

You can run IPTV on a built-in Android TV (Sony, Philips, Hisense) or on a dedicated streaming device. Here are the best options.

DeviceMax qualityBest for
NVIDIA Shield TV Pro4K HDRPower users, best performance
Chromecast with Google TV (4K)4K HDRBest value mainstream choice
Built-in Android TV (Sony/Philips)4K HDRNo extra device needed
Xiaomi TV Stick / Box4K HDRBudget streaming stick

Our recommendation

The NVIDIA Shield TV Pro is the most powerful Android TV device and the best choice if you want flawless 4K and the smoothest TiviMate experience — it has the processing power and RAM to handle large channel lists and EPG effortlessly. For most people, the Chromecast with Google TV (4K) offers nearly all the benefit at a fraction of the price. Whichever you pick, aim for at least 2GB RAM for the best experience.

Note that the Amazon Fire TV Stick also runs a version of Android, but uses Amazon's own app store rather than Google Play — so its setup differs slightly. If you use a Fire Stick instead, follow our dedicated IPTV for Fire Stick guide.

Internet speed for Android TV IPTV

Android TV devices generally have better Wi-Fi than built-in Smart TV chips, but a wired connection is still best for 4K.

QualityMinimumRecommendedConnection
HD (720p)5 Mbps10 MbpsWi-Fi fine
FHD (1080p)10 Mbps15 MbpsWi-Fi fine
4K UHD25 Mbps40 MbpsEthernet preferred

Wired connection tips

The NVIDIA Shield has a built-in Ethernet port — use it for 4K. The Chromecast with Google TV needs a separate USB-Ethernet adapter (around €15) to go wired. The TiviMate buffer-size setting (Settings → Playback) can also smooth out playback on slower connections by pre-loading more of the stream.

Android TV IPTV troubleshooting — common problems

The five issues we see most often on Android TV and how to fix each. For more, see our IPTV troubleshooting guide.

1. Credentials rejected ("invalid login")

Confirm you chose Xtream Codes, not M3U; check the server URL is entered exactly, including http:// and the port; and watch for lookalike characters (0 vs O, 1 vs l). A Bluetooth keyboard makes accurate entry far easier than the remote.

2. Channels buffer or freeze

Check your speed meets the 4K requirement, switch to Ethernet if possible, increase the buffer size in TiviMate's playback settings, and close background apps. Restart the device if buffering persists.

3. App runs slowly or stutters

Lower-RAM devices can struggle with very large channel lists. Clear the app cache (Settings → Apps → TiviMate → Clear cache), restart the device, and consider hiding channel groups you don't use to lighten the interface. On older devices, this is sometimes a hardware limit — a Shield or newer Chromecast is dramatically faster.

4. EPG (TV guide) is empty

The EPG loads after the channel list and can take a few minutes. In TiviMate, go to Settings → EPG → force update. Make sure you logged in with Xtream Codes, which pulls EPG automatically from StreamLux.

5. Black screen on some channels

Individual channels can be temporarily down at the source or geo-restricted by the broadcaster — outside StreamLux's control. Try an alternative stream for that channel if your app offers one. If a channel you rely on is consistently black, contact support and we'll check availability for your region.

Common mistakes to avoid on Android TV

  • Choosing M3U instead of Xtream Codes. Xtream Codes is more reliable and loads EPG automatically. Pick it whenever both are offered.
  • Typing credentials with the remote. Slow and error-prone — pair a Bluetooth keyboard or use the Google TV phone app.
  • Buying a low-RAM device for heavy use. Sub-2GB devices struggle with large channel lists. Choose a Shield or newer Chromecast for the best experience.
  • Relying on Wi-Fi for 4K on a Chromecast. Add a USB-Ethernet adapter for reliable 4K.
  • Not saving your activation email. Your Xtream Codes details are in it — keep it so you can re-enter them if you reset the device or add a second one.
